Anosike launches Abia Champions League

The Kelechi Anosike Foundation Abia Champions League, an inter-local government football tournament, has kicked off in Abia State, Nigeria. Sponsored by Dr. Kelechi Anosike, the governorship candidate for the 2027 election, the league aims to utilize sports as a platform to engage the state's youth and address unemployment.

The opening match took place at Williams Memorial Secondary School, Afugiri Ohuhu, in Umuahia North Local Government Area. The tournament brings together teams from all 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Abia State, with the ultimate goal of crowning a single champion.

Dr. Anosike, who performed the kick-off ceremony, expressed his enthusiasm for the competition, highlighting its potential for discovering new talent. He indicated that outstanding players identified during the league would receive further engagement and development opportunities.

For me, it is a very interesting and engaging football competition. It is the first of its kind and we have seen stars.

The league is structured into four groups, designed to identify promising players whose talents can be nurtured. Anosike revealed that the tournament is part of a larger vision to establish a Sports and Football Academy in Abia if he is elected governor in 2027. This academy would offer structured training, mentorship, and pathways for young athletes to progress to professional and international levels.

Anosike believes that engaging youth through sports will not only unearth talent but also promote productivity, reduce restiveness, and position Abia as a significant hub for sports development in Nigeria's South-East region. Dignitaries, community leaders, and football enthusiasts attended the opening, signaling strong community support for the initiative, which organizers intend to make an annual event aimed at fostering unity across the state through sports.
