ANPC imposed fines of over one million lei following coastal checks. What irregularities were discovered

Romanian consumer protection authorities have imposed fines exceeding one million lei following a week of inspections along the country's coastline. The National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) conducted checks between July 20-26, 2026, to ensure consumer rights were being upheld in seaside resorts.

The ANPC reported issuing 197 fines totaling over 1 million lei, along with 94 warnings. They also ordered the permanent withdrawal of non-compliant products valued at over 29,000 lei and the temporary halt of services for eight businesses until deficiencies are rectified. The total value of products inspected surpassed 148,000 lei.

Inspections uncovered numerous violations. These included businesses operating without authorization, inadequate information on textiles, footwear, and toys, and the sale of dangerous toys. A significant issue was the lack of Romanian translations for product information and instructions, a recurring problem.

Further irregularities were found in the food sector, such as food stored at incorrect temperatures, missing allergen information, use of degraded cooking oil, expired products, and unhygienised refrigeration units. Issues with accommodation services, beach operations, and pool maintenance were also noted. Some establishments failed to display essential consumer information like alternative dispute resolution details and the consumer helpline number.
