Anthony Fauci invokes Fifth Amendment at COVID-19 origins hearing

Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a U.S. Senate hearing concerning the origins of COVID-19. The hearing was led by Republican senators.

Fauci stated that he was invoking the amendment on the advice of his attorneys. He also accused Republican Senator Rand Paul of releasing private diary entries in which Fauci mused about his fame and the pandemic's origins. Fauci suggested Paul's actions were an attempt to elicit incriminating statements under oath.

"Although it pains me to do so because of the respect I have for the legislative branch of government ... under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the constitution to refrain from answering your questions," Fauci told the committee.

The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects individuals from being compelled to be a witness against themselves in any criminal case. Invoking this right is not an admission of guilt but a safeguard against coercion, mistakes, and unfair burdens of proof.
