Anthony Fauci refuses to testify, citing self-incrimination; diaries spark debate

Renowned US immunologist Anthony Fauci has declined to testify before a Senate committee for a second time, invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. The 85-year-old scientist suggested that Senator Rand Paul, an ally of former President Donald Trump, subpoenaed him with the intention of imprisoning him for perjury.

This refusal follows Senator Paul's release of thousands of pages from Fauci's personal diaries, which he reportedly obtained via a government computer. During a Senate hearing, Republicans accused the retired scientist of issuing "shameful" COVID-19 recommendations. Fauci, formerly the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden and director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, became a prominent figure in the US fight against the coronavirus.

Republicans have consistently targeted Fauci, viewing him as the face of what they perceive as mismanagement during the pandemic. Senator Paul has long been convinced that Fauci deliberately misled the public about the virus's origins. Former President Trump echoed these sentiments, alleging on Truth Social that Fauci "always tried to protect China."

Fauci's diary entries, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, indicate his evolving thoughts on the virus's origins. In January 2020, he noted that a Chinese food market was likely an "amplifier" rather than the origin. By the following year, he expressed frustration with "radical right" claims that he intentionally developed the virus. In May 2021, Fauci reiterated his belief in a natural origin but acknowledged uncertainty, calling for a thorough investigation into a potential lab leak.
