Anthropic pursues data center leases, seeks financial backing from Google, The Information reports

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is reportedly planning to establish and operate its own data centers, a significant move that would involve substantial infrastructure investment. The creator of the Claude AI assistant is also seeking financial backing from Alphabet's Google to help cover the costs associated with leasing these facilities.

According to The Information, Anthropic has already entered into more than a dozen preliminary lease agreements for U.S. data centers. These agreements collectively represent a capacity exceeding 1 gigawatt. The report cites sources with direct knowledge of Anthropic's plans.

Furthermore, Anthropic executives have discussed an arrangement where Google, a major investor and co-designer of some server chips Anthropic might use, would provide a financial guarantee for the lease payments. Google declined to comment on rumors or speculation, and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This push for expanded computing capacity is driven by strong demand for Anthropic's Claude AI models. The company is also gearing up for a potential initial public offering (IPO), having confidentially filed for one earlier this month. In April, Alphabet had planned to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, and the AI startup recently secured $65 billion in funding at a $965 billion valuation, surpassing OpenAI.
