Antonelli Wins From 19th as Ferrari Endures Nightmare at Monza

Andrea Kimi Antonelli turned a 19th-place start into victory at the Italian Grand Prix, leading George Russell and Max Verstappen to the finish. The result marked a remarkable recovery at Monza, while Ferrari endured a nightmare home race.

A virtual safety-car period followed Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin stopping with a car failure. Antonelli and Verstappen used the opportunity to make relatively quick pit stops from the leading group. Once back on track, both drivers quickly fought their way past rivals.

The fresher tires favored the 20-year-old Antonelli. He caught Russell in the closing stages and passed his Mercedes teammate on his second attempt. It was his 26th overtake of the race and secured the win.

Verstappen held third behind the two Mercedes cars. The McLarens followed, with Lando Norris finishing ahead of Oscar Piastri. Lewis Hamilton was sixth for Ferrari.

After 13 race weekends, Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings with 267 points, followed by Russell on 201, Hamilton on 191, Norris on 171, Charles Leclerc on 155, Verstappen on 127 and Piastri on 116. Mercedes leads the constructors’ championship with 468 points, ahead of Ferrari on 346 and McLaren on 287. The season continues with the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid from September 11 to 13.
