Antwerp's Bourla Theatre Renovation Postponed Again, Toneelhuis Stays Longer

Antwerp's historic Bourla Theatre, a cultural gem dating back to 1834, will continue to host performances for at least another year as its much-needed renovation has once again been delayed. This second postponement means the resident Toneelhuis theatre company can extend its stay in the iconic building, a relief for artists and audiences alike.

The extensive refurbishment, crucial for bringing the Bourla up to modern safety, comfort, and sustainability standards, was initially slated to begin last summer. However, preparatory studies took longer than anticipated, pushing the start date to this summer. Now, the project faces further delays, with works not expected to commence until after the summer of 2027.

Culture alderman Lien Van de Kelder expressed understanding, stating, "We don't want to turn off the light any sooner than necessary." She assured that as long as the Bourla remains functional, Toneelhuis will continue to welcome audiences. The company plans to stage performances in its smaller venue on the Eilandje, combined with shows in the Bourla itself. Following the Bourla's renovation, the Eilandje venue will be converted into a 400-seat theater, serving as the sole performance space during the three-year construction period. The total cost for this ambitious project is estimated at a staggering 98 million euros.
