Antwerp's 't Kiel street fair canceled after 90 years due to safety concerns

For the first time in over 90 years, the traditional street fair, or 'braderij,' in Antwerp's 't Kiel district will not take place this year. The city has refused to grant a permit, citing unmet safety conditions, a decision that has sparked considerable dismay among local merchants and the Neutral Syndicate for Self-Employed (NSZ).

René Hermans, a third-generation poultry seller whose family business has been a fixture at the fair on Abdijstraat, expressed deep disappointment. He fondly recalled his childhood experiences at the braderij, helping his father sell cheese and learning the trade. Hermans remembers the 1970s and 80s as the fair's golden years, when the street was packed with visitors drawn from afar.

During its heyday, the braderij was a significant event, featuring elaborate shows with brass bands from Rotterdam, complimentary wine, and prize lotteries designed to keep attendees engaged. Even celebrities like Margriet Hermans and Wendy Van Wanten made appearances. However, Hermans noted a decline in recent years, attributing it partly to changes in the Abdijstraat itself, which has seen a shift from diverse businesses like printers and cafes to its current state.

The financial viability of the fair has also become a challenge, with rising costs for attractions and reduced budgets for prizes. The city administration stated that the permit was denied because safety requirements were not met, but indicated that the braderij could potentially return next year if all conditions are satisfied. The NSZ echoed the merchants' regret over the cancellation, highlighting the event's importance to the local community and economy.
