APC chairman’s ex-aide joins NDC

A notable political figure in Kano, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, has switched allegiance from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Dawaki, who previously served as Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and was a former member of the House of Representatives, officially joined the NDC on Monday.

His defection occurred during a meeting at the residence of NDC leader and founder of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Kano. Dawaki was welcomed into the Kwankwasiyya fold with the movement's signature red cap. This move follows closely after Dawaki reportedly failed to secure the APC's consensus ticket for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat.

Saifullahi Hassan, Kwankwaso's media aide, confirmed Dawaki's entry into the NDC, stating that the former APC stalwart joined with numerous political supporters. Political analysts view this defection as a significant shake-up in Kano's political landscape, particularly as opposition parties and the ruling bloc intensify consultations for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Sources within the NDC suggest that Dawaki's arrival could reshape the political dynamics in Kano, where various aspirants are actively seeking party tickets. While specific future political arrangements for Dawaki have not been officially detailed, party insiders indicate ongoing consultations regarding potential elective positions. Dawaki reportedly pledged loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement and expressed his readiness to collaborate with the party leadership, citing extensive consultations with his associates and supporters as the basis for his decision.
