APC Speakers Hail State Police Bill, Promise Safeguards Against Abuse

The Forum of Progressive Speakers of State Legislators, affiliated with Nigeria's All Progressives Congress (APC), has lauded the recent passage of the State Police Bill, hailing it as a significant advancement for the nation's security architecture. The legislators expressed their full support for the bill's implementation, while also recognizing and addressing concerns regarding the potential for state governors to abuse the powers granted to them.

The bill's passage in the Senate comes amid a surge in kidnappings, banditry, and communal clashes across the country. Forum Chairman Hon. Haruna Dangyatim, who is also the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, described the Senate's action as a "historic turning point." He stated, "The passage of this bill is a resounding victory for effective governance and community-focused policing." Dangyatin emphasized that decentralizing policing is a crucial step toward better safeguarding lives and property at the subnational level, empowering states to respond more swiftly to security threats.

While pledging unwavering support for the bill's rollout, the forum acknowledged public apprehension about governors potentially misusing state police forces. To counter this, Dangyatin assured that APC-led State Houses of Assembly would establish "robust legal frameworks" tailored to each state's specific security needs. Furthermore, the forum committed to designing "stringent oversight mechanisms" to ensure that state policing operates within the bounds of human rights, professionalism, and the rule of law.

For years, the clamour for a security structure that understands the local terrain has been loud. With this enactment, we are empowering states to better protect their people and respond swiftly to security threats.

The legislators also committed to working with state executives to secure adequate funding for the new state police outfits, covering training, equipment, and personnel welfare. The Forum extended its gratitude to the National Assembly, the Executive, and all stakeholders who championed the bill, expressing confidence that this measure will significantly reduce crime and restore peace across Nigeria.
