APM Demands Verifiable Impact of Subsidy Removal

Nigeria's Allied People’s Movement (APM) has called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to provide verifiable evidence of the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians' lives. The demand comes amid widespread economic hardship and a rising poverty rate that the party claims has worsened over the last three years.

APM stated that despite significant funds accruing to the federal government since the subsidy's removal, the cost of living has surged, public facilities have deteriorated, and infrastructure deficits remain substantial. The party highlighted Nigeria's infrastructure gap, estimated at $2.3 trillion, requiring approximately $100 billion annually for the next three decades.

The vague claims by the APC government that the proceeds are being invested in critical sectors without real figures and specific project or programme is completely unacceptable and cannot substitute for transparency and accountability.

"Hunger has become a national emergency," APM declared, noting that millions of families struggle for daily meals, small businesses are collapsing under increased operating costs, and the purchasing power of workers has drastically declined. The party expressed frustration over the government's lack of transparent accounting for the trillions of naira allegedly generated from the subsidy removal, accusing the APC of corruption and fabricating achievements.

APM insists that vague claims of investment in critical sectors are unacceptable without concrete figures and specific project details. The party demands an immediate, detailed, and independently verifiable impact assessment of the subsidy removal policy. Nigerians, APM stated, deserve to know precisely how much has been saved since May 2023, which projects have been funded, and their locations. The party affirmed its support for genuine national development reforms but criticized the APC government for celebrating paper figures while citizens struggle to afford basic necessities like food, healthcare, transportation, and education.
