Apple Maps renames Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’ for US users

Apple has renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America” for users in the United States, following Alphabet’s decision to make the same change on Google Maps. The move came after President Donald Trump issued an executive order renaming the lake.

Apple said the US display follows the name entered in the US Geographic Names Information System. Users in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” while users elsewhere will see both names. Apple used the same approach after Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed the Gulf of America.

Trump’s order applies to US federal usage. It does not control what Canada, international organizations or other bodies call the lake. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and New York Governor Kathy Hochul said within hours of the order that they would not change the name, which the report described as more than 400 years old.

The dispute has pulled major US technology companies into geopolitical disagreements as the Trump administration pressures them to follow executive orders that allies and international bodies have rejected. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that most Americans opposed both the lake renaming and Trump’s move to raise taxes on imported Canadian goods.

About 52% of Lake Ontario’s surface lies in Canada, with the rest in New York. Trump has repeatedly taunted Canada since early 2025 over becoming the 51st US state, an idea Canadian leaders have dismissed as ridiculous. Google and Apple also changed their map applications for US users after Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed in January 2025.
