Apple Offer Rejected: Yang Zhilin's 'Kimi K3' Shakes Up Global AI Scene

The global artificial intelligence landscape is abuzz following the release of 'Kimi K3,' a powerful new open-weight large language model from Chinese startup Moonshot. The model's capabilities have sent ripples through the AI ecosystem, drawing significant attention to Moonshot's founder, Yang Zhilin. Yang, born in 1992 in Guangdong province, is a prominent figure among China's new generation of tech entrepreneurs. His academic journey began with a first-place award in the Guangdong Provincial Olympiad in Informatics, earning him a recommendation to the prestigious Tsinghua University. He graduated with top honors from Tsinghua's computer science department in 2015 before pursuing doctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the United States. During his time at CMU, Yang was the lead author on research co-developed with the Google Brain team, resulting in the release of XLNet. This pre-trained language model for natural language processing is considered a pivotal achievement in the field of long-context processing for large language models. Defying expectations of joining a global tech giant, Yang chose to return to China after completing his Ph.D. He then founded Moonshot, aiming to advance AI development within China.
