Apple Raises iPad and MacBook Prices Amid Soaring Chip Costs Driven by AI Boom

Apple announced Thursday it is raising prices on its iPad and MacBook models, a move attributed to the soaring costs of memory and storage chips. The company stated that the burgeoning artificial intelligence industry's demand for these components has made it impossible to continue shielding customers from the price surge.

While the iPhone, Apple's primary revenue generator, remains unaffected for now, the price increase affects other product lines. The starting price for Apple's Neo laptop has risen from $599 to $699. This situation highlights that even a company with Apple's extensive supply-chain network is vulnerable to memory price fluctuations, which are impacting the broader consumer electronics market.

We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly. We have shielded our customers from these increases so far, but we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including today’s increases for iPad and Mac.

Memory manufacturers have recently prioritized orders from AI chipmakers like Nvidia, leading to record profits for them but reduced supply for other electronics manufacturers. Apple noted, "We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly." The company explained that while it had absorbed these costs previously, it has now reached a point where price increases are necessary.

Prices for a MacBook Air with 512 gigabytes have gone up by $200, and a MacBook Pro with 1 terabyte of storage will be $300 more expensive. Price increases were also applied to the HomePod smart speaker and Apple TV set-top box. Industry tracker TrendForce reported that dynamic random-access memory prices rose as much as 98% in the first quarter of 2026 and are expected to jump another 58% to 63% in the current quarter. This surge, driven by AI data center construction, is leading companies like Micron to secure long-term commitments for memory supplies.
