Apple's affordable MacBook Neo to receive major upgrade with enhanced specs

Apple's entry-level MacBook Neo has achieved remarkable success since its March 2026 launch, selling over 1.1 million units globally in its first quarter. This strong debut marks the most impressive performance for a Mac series product in recent years, establishing the MacBook Neo as a significant player in the affordable laptop market.

Reports indicate that a successor, the MacBook Neo 2, is already in development and poised for substantial upgrades. The current model features an A18 Pro chip and 8GB of memory, which handles everyday tasks like document editing, web browsing, and light entertainment adequately. However, the 8GB memory can become a bottleneck during intensive multitasking or high-load operations.

The next generation is expected to feature the A19 Pro chip and a significant increase in RAM to 12GB, a 50% boost. This upgrade is anticipated to considerably improve multitasking capabilities and overall system fluidity. Crucially, the increased memory will fully support enhanced local AI functionalities within the new macOS system, addressing limitations faced by some AI features on the current 8GB threshold.

Beyond internal enhancements, Apple is also planning to introduce new color options for the MacBook Neo 2, expanding the choices beyond the current silver, pink, orange, and indigo. These combined upgrades, particularly the enhanced memory and chip performance, are expected to significantly boost the competitiveness of the MacBook Neo 2 for value-conscious consumers. The new model is projected to launch in the first half of 2027.
