Apple's first foldable phone, 'iPhone Ultra,' may feature asymmetrical design

Details about Apple's anticipated first foldable smartphone, reportedly named the 'iPhone Ultra,' are emerging from leaked design elements. Recent leaks, including a screen protector image, suggest a distinctive asymmetrical design for the device.

The leaked screen protector, shared by prominent tech tipster Ice Universe, indicates that the foldable phone might feature a design where one side, presumably near the hinge, is squared off, while the opposite side is rounded. This creates a non-uniform aesthetic, a departure from typical smartphone designs.

Ice Universe initially suggested the display itself might be asymmetrical, but later clarified that the screen protector covers the entire front glass, potentially creating the appearance of asymmetry. It's possible the actual display will have uniformly rounded corners and a consistent thickness.

Another notable potential design change involves the front camera's placement. The leaked protector shows a single camera cutout positioned in the upper right corner, rather than the center. If implemented, this would mark the first time Apple places an iPhone's front camera off-center.

Speculation also suggests that the 'iPhone Ultra' might forgo Apple's 'Dynamic Island' in favor of a single punch-hole camera. This could be linked to rumors that the device will feature Touch ID instead of Face ID, potentially eliminating the need for the TrueDepth sensor array required for facial recognition. The device is expected to have a shorter, wider form factor, with an external display around 5.5 inches and an internal display of approximately 7.8 inches. Industry observers anticipate Apple might unveil its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series in September.
