Arce narrowly misses medal in European steeplechase; Spanish relay team also fourth

Dani Arce chased his lifelong goal of a gold medal at the European Championships, but fell just short, finishing fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase. The 34-year-old athlete, who also cares for his mother with multiple sclerosis, pushed the pace early in the race.

He found himself in a duel with Germany's Frederik Ruppert, the only finalist to have run under eight minutes. Ruppert eventually won the gold in 8:25.33, with Arce fading in the final lap and being overtaken by Ruben Querinjean of Luxembourg (silver) and Germany's Karl Bebendorf (bronze).

This near-miss echoes Arce's previous close calls, including a fifth-place finish in Rome and a retroactive bronze in Munich due to a disqualification. He believes only gold will satisfy him, driven by an inherent nonconformity and a relentless pursuit of excellence. "I've always sought excellence," Arce stated after the race. "I've done everything through hard work and sacrifice, those are the values my family and friends have instilled in me. I will continue to do everything within my power, as long as it's clean. Tenacity is what breaks the stone, like water."

In another track event, the Spanish women's 4x400m relay team, silver medalists at the World Relays last year and bronze medalists at the recent World Championships, also finished fourth. They narrowly missed the podium despite a strong showing, with the Netherlands winning gold, Great Britain taking silver, and Italy securing bronze.
