Archaeologists find unique Mayan-style remains in Veracruz

Archaeologists in Mexico's eastern state of Veracruz have unearthed significant ancient remains, including a building structure and a sculpture exhibiting Mayan characteristics alongside previously unseen features. President Claudia Sheinbaum has deemed the discovery "very relevant" and committed government resources to its research and restoration. The site, known as Campo Viejo in Coatepec, has yielded a platform adorned with circular stones, a design distinct from other regional findings. Accompanying this is a monolith, measuring 1.88 meters tall, which experts believe depicts two figures, one with Mayan traits, receiving a divine liquid, possibly water. This imagery is thought to relate to a period of severe drought in the region. Lino Espinoza García, an archaeologist with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and a coordinator at the site, described the find as "unique" with no prior precedents. The structures date back to the Early Classic period, between 200 and 600 AD. Alberto Vázquez, another lead archaeologist, emphasized the structure's particularity, noting no current correlation with other known sites. The INAH confirmed that the attributes of the platform are not typical of the region and had not been previously documented.
