Archery: Nigeria win historic team gold, seven medals at African Championships

Nigeria has recorded its best-ever performance at the African Archery Championships, clinching a total of seven medals at the 15th edition of the continental competition held in Oran, Algeria. The impressive haul includes one gold, five silver, and one bronze medal, underscoring the nation's rising prominence in African archery. The highlight of the championships was Nigeria's historic gold medal in the barebow women's team event. The team, comprising Faith Adekogbe, Mandu Eteidung, and Precious Fanny-Amun, defeated host nation Algeria 5-3 in the final to secure the continental title. This victory marks Nigeria's first-ever team gold medal at this prestigious event.

Faith Adekogbe emerged as Nigeria's most decorated athlete, earning three medals throughout the competition. In addition to her gold medal-winning performance with the women's team, she secured an individual silver medal in the barebow category. Adekogbe demonstrated strong form, defeating opponents from Algeria and a compatriot in earlier rounds before ultimately falling in the final. She also partnered with Abubakar Usman to win a silver medal in the barebow mixed team event. Usman contributed significantly with two silver medals, while the barebow men's team also secured a silver medal.

Nigeria's success extended to the compound archery events, where the country added three more medals. The men's compound team and the mixed compound team both earned silver medals after reaching their respective finals. Seun Emmanuel Oyeleke was a key member of both these teams, contributing two silver medals to Nigeria's tally. Hareke Evans secured a bronze medal in the compound women's individual event, defeating her Algerian opponent in the third-place match. The Nigeria Archery Federation (NAFED) sent its largest contingent ever, with 18 athletes competing across six divisions, reflecting a strong commitment to developing the sport.
