Argentina Braces for 'Super Niño' Storms, Heavy Rain Alerts Issued

Argentina is anticipating a significant weather shift with the arrival of a "Super Niño" phenomenon, which is forecast to bring 72 hours of intense storms, strong gusts of wind, and electrical activity. This dynamic weather pattern is expected to persist from early August through October, marking a departure from a more stable winter period. The intensification of El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific is contributing to this unstable weather, with reports indicating a marked warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific.

The "Super Niño" is not expected to bring continuous rainfall across all regions. Instead, different areas will experience varying types and intensities of weather phenomena. The National Meteorological Service has issued yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in several provinces, including northeastern Salta and Formosa, southwestern Mendoza, and western Neuquén. These alerts primarily cover areas near the Andes mountains in the west and a strip in the far north. Forecasters predict these alerts may extend to central Argentina in the coming weeks.

In the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), weak rains are expected to return on Thursday, preceding a temperature increase over the weekend. The week began with stable, cool air, with fog expected during early mornings and nights. Temperatures are forecast to range between 11°C and 15°C on Tuesday, with partly cloudy skies and increasing winds on Wednesday. Thursday will see temperatures between 13°C and 16°C, with rain expected throughout the day. A temperature drop is anticipated by the end of the week, with lows of 7°C and highs of 15°C.
