Argentina: Bridge Tolls More Than Double, Sparking User Outrage

Drivers crossing the Rosario-Victoria bridge over the Paraná River are facing dramatically higher tolls, with some payments costing more than double their previous rates. The significant increase, which users have publicly protested, has led to growing discontent among those who regularly use the bridge to travel between Santa Fe and Entre Ríos provinces.

For automobiles, the toll has surged by 385%. Previously costing around $1,043.92, the new rates are $5,061.43 for TelePase (an electronic toll collection system) and a staggering $10,122.86 for cash or other electronic payment methods like credit cards, QR codes, or virtual wallets. This drastic change disproportionately affects daily commuters and commercial travelers.

The toll hikes extend to other vehicle types as well. Motorcycles now pay $2,530.72 with TelePase. Heavy transport vehicles face escalating costs, with two-axle trucks paying $10,122.86 and larger trucks with eight axles seeing an increase of 773%, jumping from $5,219.58 to $45,552.87 with TelePase, and even higher with electronic payment.

The concessionaire, Conexión Alto Delta, defended the sharp increase, citing the completion of mandatory infrastructure upgrades including repaving, LED lighting, and signage, which required an investment exceeding $12 billion. However, National Deputy Germán Martínez criticized the hike as "unacceptable," pointing out the substantial percentage increases and the impact on users who have endured months of poor road conditions. He vowed to work with other legislators to halt the increase.
