Argentina Investigates Alleged Espionage Targeting Supreme Court President

A serious investigation is underway in Argentina concerning alleged espionage and filming targeting Horacio Rosatti, the President of the Supreme Court and the Council of the Magistracy. The probe was initiated by federal prosecutor Carlos Stornelli after security personnel reported observing individuals filming movements at the entrance to Rosatti's home in Santa Fe. Judge Julián Ercolini is overseeing the investigation, which includes gathering security footage and interviewing witnesses.

The incident occurred when Rosatti's security detail noticed two individuals with a tripod and camera pointed towards the residence as they prepared to escort the judge. One of the individuals identified was of Venezuelan nationality, though it remains unclear if they were members of the press. The prosecutor's office has ordered statements from the security personnel and officers from the Federal Police delegation in Santa Fe. Additionally, the investigation seeks to review any existing cases or information related to previous incidents involving Dr. Rosatti to determine their relevance.

This alleged surveillance attempt comes in the wake of a prior incident in April, where a man was sentenced to four years in prison for attempting to steal a vehicle assigned to Rosatti. At the time, prosecutor Diego Luciani suggested that the attempted theft was not an isolated event but part of a broader pattern of "harassment and siege" against the Supreme Court president since 2019. Luciani had stated that the motive behind the theft attempt was "dark and sinister," indicating a clear objective targeting Rosatti, and pointed to other events such as a property intrusion attempt in November 2023 and intimidating graffiti as evidence of this ongoing campaign.
