Argentina issues extreme weather alerts for cold, snow, and storms

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a series of red, orange, and yellow alerts across the country for July 22, warning of extreme cold, snow, and storms. The highest danger level, a red alert, is in effect for southern Chubut and western Santa Cruz, where extreme cold conditions are expected to bring temperatures as low as -11°C. These severe weather phenomena pose risks to society, life, property, and the environment.

Orange alerts are in place for the rest of Santa Cruz, while yellow alerts are issued for northern Chubut and Tierra del Fuego, indicating potential health effects for residents. The SMN also issued a yellow alert for snowfall in the mountainous region of Neuquén, warning of potential disruptions to travel and border crossings due to reduced visibility and precipitation.

Authorities have recommended that people avoid outdoor activities, use vehicles equipped for winter conditions, clear snow from roofs, and stay informed about road conditions. They also advised stocking up on food, water, fuel, and medication. Meanwhile, a yellow alert for storms has been issued for the southern tip of Misiones, predicting isolated heavy showers, intense rainfall over short periods, hail, gusts exceeding 90 km/h, and significant electrical activity. Accumulated rainfall could reach between 70 and 130 millimeters, with potential for higher localized amounts.

In the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, temperatures are expected to range between 9°C and 13°C with cloudy skies and isolated showers. The province of Buenos Aires will see slightly warmer temperatures, with a minimum of 12°C and a maximum of 19°C, also experiencing cloudy skies and scattered showers.
