Argentina issues extreme weather alerts for cold, snow, and wind

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued severe weather alerts across the country for Thursday, July 23, warning of extreme cold, heavy snowfall, and strong winds. The alerts, ranging from red to yellow, indicate potentially dangerous conditions for life, property, and the environment.

The most severe, a red alert, is in effect for Santa Cruz province due to extreme cold, with minimum temperatures expected to reach -11°C. This level of alert signifies that weather phenomena can affect everyone. Tierra del Fuego province is under a yellow alert, indicating potential health impacts on residents.

Heavy snowfall is anticipated in the Andean regions of Río Negro, Neuquén, Mendoza, and San Juan. The SMN forecasts accumulated snow of 20 to 50 centimeters in the cordilleras and 10 to 30 centimeters in lower areas, with potential for higher amounts. Mendoza and San Juan also face an orange alert for intense and persistent snowfall, with accumulations of 50 to 150 centimeters expected, accompanied by reduced visibility.

Strong winds are also a concern, particularly in Patagonia and parts of the northwest. Winds of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour, are predicted for Mendoza and San Juan. Similar conditions are expected in Salta, Jujuy, Santiago del Estero, and La Rioja. The SMN advises avoiding outdoor activities, securing loose objects, staying away from windows, and exercising caution while driving.
