Argentina Issues Yellow Alerts for Extreme Cold and Strong Winds on June 16

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued yellow alerts for extreme cold and strong winds across several provinces on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. This follows a significant temperature drop experienced at the start of the week in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA).

The extreme cold alert specifically targets the central regions of Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and Corrientes, as well as northern Misiones. The SMN warns that temperatures could reach dangerous lows of 0°C, particularly in Santa Fe and Entre Ríos, posing risks to vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. Minimum temperatures in the Litoral region began at 2°C with a perceived temperature just above 1°C.

To mitigate the effects of the cold, the SMN recommends avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure, dressing in multiple layers of light clothing, generating body heat through movement, ensuring safe home heating, avoiding sudden temperature changes, staying hydrated, and refraining from smoking indoors. Meanwhile, a yellow alert for strong winds is active in the Patagonian provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro, with expected speeds of 40-60 km/h and gusts up to 100 km/h.

The forecast for the AMBA indicates temperatures will remain below 10°C through mid-week. While minimums are slightly higher than the previous weekend, maximums might be lower. In Buenos Aires city, temperatures are expected to range from a low of 7°C to a high of 17°C, with clear skies in the morning turning partly cloudy in the afternoon. The province of Buenos Aires anticipates a similar pattern, with a minimum of 2°C and a maximum of 14°C.
