Argentina ranks as world's second-largest exporter of horse meat

Argentina holds a significant position in the global equine meat market, ranking as the second-largest exporter worldwide, surpassed only by Mongolia. In the first half of 2026, the country saw a notable increase in both the volume and value of its horse meat exports compared to the same period in 2025.

During January to June 2026, Argentina exported 7,070 tons of equine meat, a 10% rise from the previous year. The value of these exports surged by 42%. Industry sources indicate that horse meat production in Argentina is largely a residual activity, meaning horses are not primarily raised for slaughter but rather for other purposes, with meat production being a secondary outcome.

Globally, the horse meat market has experienced a sustained decline over the last two decades. Trade data reveals a drop from approximately 157,238 tons in 2006 to 93,689 tons in 2025. Despite this contraction, Argentina has managed to maintain its standing among the principal international suppliers. In 2025, Mongolia led exports with 34,021 tons, followed by Argentina with 11,542 tons, and then Belgium, Poland, Uruguay, and Spain.

While Argentine exports have mirrored the global downward trend, their performance remains relatively stable within the group of significant exporting nations. Between 2016 and 2025, Argentina exported an average of 15,613 tons annually, generating approximately US$52.6 million in FOB value. The first half of 2026 shows a positive trend, with export volumes increasing, driven by strong performance in January, March, April, and May.
