Argentina’s friendlies delayed as two unusual African opponents emerge

The Argentine Football Association had promised to fill in the national team’s post-World Cup schedule at the start of the week. The announcement did not arrive, however, and is now expected on Wednesday as the AFA waits for FIFA to resolve sporting and logistical questions.

Two unusual African opponents are taking shape for the September and October FIFA window: Burkina Faso, ranked 62nd by FIFA, and Benin, ranked 93rd. The problem is that the teams are scheduled to face each other in Ouagadougou on Sept. 25, creating an obstacle to the plan.

The matches would not be ordinary friendlies. They are being prepared primarily as a tribute to Argentina’s World Cup runners-up. Nicolás Otamendi, the team’s vice-captain, is also expected to receive a special farewell after announcing his retirement following the World Cup. The gesture would resemble Ángel Di María’s send-off after the 2024 Copa América.

Lionel Messi is not expected to appear in either match. Although he has announced his departure from the national team on social media, Argentina expects him to have one final appearance, or perhaps several, before the home fans in a special event.

Scheduling the matches also involves venue complications. A Lali Espósito concert at River Plate’s Monumental stadium on Sept. 26 would require time to build and dismantle the stage, making Oct. 6 the most practical date there. Córdoba’s Mario Alberto Kempes stadium appears to be the leading option for the other game, since Rosario will host the 2026 South American Games and face heavy hotel, security and logistical demands. Córdoba, however, is due to host Boca against Racing in the Copa Argentina quarterfinals and Belgrano against Talleres in the provincial league derby, leaving Sept. 25 as the most feasible date for Argentina.
