Argentina’s G6 business groups back Milei government’s sovereignty claim over the Falklands

Argentina’s most powerful business and banking groups have rallied behind President Javier Milei’s renewed sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

The Group of Six, known as the G6, issued a statement supporting the government’s position after Milei addressed the country in a televised national broadcast on Thursday. The group also backed “actions aimed at safeguarding our country’s natural resources.”

The sovereignty over the Falkland Islands constitutes a national, permanent and inalienable cause, above political differences, and it must unite all Argentines.

The G6 includes the Association of Argentine Banks, the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange, the Argentine Chamber of Commerce and Services, the Argentine Chamber of Construction, the Argentine Rural Society and the Argentine Industrial Union. Together, the organizations represent a broad cross-section of Argentina’s business establishment.

“The sovereignty over the Falkland Islands constitutes a national, permanent and inalienable cause, above political differences, and it must unite all Argentines,” the groups said. They reaffirmed the need to maintain Argentina’s claim firmly while respecting the national constitution and international law, and while seeking a peaceful solution through diplomacy and negotiation.

The organizations also described the defense of territory, natural resources and the nation’s strategic interests as “a responsibility of all Argentines” and “a state policy that we must uphold together.” Their statement therefore aligned the business sector with Milei’s call for national unity.

The G6 reaffirms the need to uphold the Argentine claim firmly within the framework of our national constitution, international law and the pursuit of a peaceful solution through diplomacy and negotiation.

Milei announced tougher sanctions against companies carrying out hydrocarbon exploration and production in the South Atlantic with authorization from what he called the illegitimate British administration on the islands. He also confirmed that his government would complete construction of a naval base in Tierra del Fuego.

The G6 statement came after U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington had put its rejection of the United Kingdom’s position on the Falklands under “review,” amid complaints about the lack of support from NATO allies for the war in the Middle East.

This issue demands that we put our weapons aside and show the world that we stand united as a nation and as a society. Because some causes stand above every political difference. Malvinas is one of them.
