Argentina's Government Worried by Fentanyl Case References to Health Minister

Argentina's government is grappling with mounting concerns following the arrest of two former National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (Anmat) officials in connection with deaths caused by adulterated fentanyl. The judicial investigation has reportedly made references to Health Minister Mario Lugones, raising fears of potential complications for his role.

Sources within the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace, acknowledged that the fentanyl tragedy, which has claimed at least 90 lives, represents a significant and ongoing scandal. The case is progressing in Federal Court N° 3 of La Plata, presided over by Judge Ernesto Kreplak.

While Minister Lugones remains in his post, with President Javier Milei recently retweeting a post from Lugones about health management, there is palpable unease within the ruling party about the case's potential ramifications. Those close to the minister note his outward calm but acknowledge his awareness of the political risks. Lugones previously expressed deep distress over the incident, calling it an "attack on the people" and condemning the perpetrators.

The arrested former officials, Nélida Agustina Bisio and Gabriela Mantecón Fumadó, were released on bail after posting a 75 million peso bond. The prosecution alleges they bore responsibility for the production, commercialization, and supply of the contaminated fentanyl, suggesting a "state cover-up." Mantecón Fumadó reportedly stated that Lugones was kept informed of decisions regarding the laboratories involved and had advocated for their closure. Bisio, who headed Anmat, was supported by Lugones for a period before resigning in January, while Mantecón was dismissed in August of the previous year as the criminal investigation, which began in May 2025, advanced.
