Argentina's 'Leones' Eye Best-Ever Finish at 2026 Field Hockey World Cup

Argentina's national men's field hockey team, known as "Los Leones," is set to compete in the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium, starting August 15. While not considered favorites for the title, the team harbors ambitions of a strong performance to elevate the national colors on the international stage.

Their primary goal is to surpass their best-ever World Cup finish, which was third place achieved in The Hague in 2014. This year's tournament presents a renewed format, with top-performing teams advancing to a championship bracket, while others compete for lower placements, starting from ninth place.

Los Leones have been drawn into Group A and will play their initial matches at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen. Their opening game is scheduled for August 16 against Japan. Two days later, they will face the host nation, the Netherlands, considered one of the main contenders for the championship. Their final group stage opponent on August 20 will be Scotland.

The squad, managed by Lucas Rey, includes experienced players like Matías Rey, who is participating in his sixth World Cup. Other key players in the roster are Maico Casella and Thomas Habif.
