Argentina's Milei Intervenes in Brazil Election, Calls Lula's Government 'Trash'

Far-right Argentinian President Javier Milei has openly intervened in Brazil's upcoming presidential election, visiting the country to endorse far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro and labeling the current Brazilian government "trash." Milei's trip is widely interpreted as an international effort to prevent the re-election of Brazil's progressive President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the October election.

During his attendance at the Liberal Party's national convention in São Paulo on July 25, Milei rallied support for Bolsonaro, who was officially nominated as the party's presidential candidate. Milei declared Bolsonaro "the only one who can stop Lula today and stand at the forefront of true change." Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years for attempting a coup.

"In October, you will have to choose between liberation or the continuation of subjugation by the left," Milei proclaimed. "The path to socialism is always and everywhere the path to totalitarianism. Enough of socialist trash and thieves." He further criticized Lula's economic policies, stating, "Brazil is heading for a debt crisis because Lula is not carrying out fiscal adjustments. Just as Argentina has the 'Kichnerist risk,' Brazil today has the 'Lula risk,' and this is clearly reflected in the stock market."

Milei also targeted the São Paulo Forum, co-founded by Lula and the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, calling it a "network that spread socialism throughout Latin America." Prior to the rally, Milei met with São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, a right-wing figure who served as Infrastructure Minister under Jair Bolsonaro, and received the state's highest honor, the Ipiranga Order. Meanwhile, the Brazilian government denied visas to U.S. State Department officials, citing their intent to shape public opinion regarding alleged election fraud, a move the U.S. State Department called "baseless."
