Argentina's Route of the Seven Lakes reopens after rockslide

The National Route 40, specifically the scenic Seven Lakes stretch in Argentina's Patagonia region, has reopened to traffic. The road was closed on Thursday due to a significant rockslide that occurred near kilometer 2208.7, between San Martín de los Andes and Catritre.

The rockfall, involving large boulders, was attributed to intense snowfall and heavy rains that have been affecting the Andean region. The slide, located just three kilometers from the center of San Martín de los Andes, necessitated a joint operation by municipal, provincial, and national teams to clear the roadway. Traffic was initially permitted between 5 PM and 10 PM on Friday, with permanent police assistance.

Authorities have cautioned that the area remains under surveillance due to persistent weather alerts for precipitation. The possibility of additional rockfalls exists, and drivers are reminded of the mandatory requirement to carry physical chains. Extreme caution is advised, along with adherence to speed limits and directions from road personnel. The Meteorological Service has indicated that a weather front will bring rain and snow throughout the weekend, with an intensification expected by Monday.
