Argentine Court Orders 10-Year Mental Health Internment for Man Declared Irresponsible in Elderly Woman's Murder

A 59-year-old Dominican man, identified only by the nickname Junior, will spend the next decade in a mental health facility rather than prison after being declared not criminally responsible for the murder of Olga Delfina Quinteros, a 70-year-old retiree. The crime occurred in March of last year in Piedra del Águila, Neuquén province.

The court's decision followed medical evaluations from both the hospital where Junior was being held and the psychiatric department of the Neuquén Judicial Power's Forensic Medical Body. These reports concluded that the accused was incapable of understanding his actions or controlling his behavior at the time of the incident. The Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) formally requested the declaration of irresponsibility on April 17.

On March 14, 2024, Junior allegedly killed Quinteros by beating her in her home. He then stole cash, a necklace, a watch, and a ring before fleeing in her Volkswagen T-Cross. He was apprehended in Buenos Aires after abandoning the car in the province of Buenos Aires due to lack of fuel, with the intention of seeking asylum at the Dominican Embassy. Initially investigated as a homicide, the case shifted to qualified robbery resulting in death, with the MPF arguing for his irresponsibility based on medical findings.
