Argentine Investors Bolster Defensive Portfolios Amid Market Volatility

Argentine investors are increasingly adopting defensive strategies, prioritizing capital preservation and diversification in their investment portfolios. This shift comes as market volatility is no longer seen as a temporary issue but a permanent feature, forcing a redefinition of investment approaches.

A global survey by Schroders highlights that Argentine investors are even more focused on building resilient portfolios than their global counterparts. Mariano Fiorito, Country Head of Schroders Argentina and Uruguay, noted that 89% of local respondents identify diversification as a key investment goal, surpassing the global average of 84%. Similarly, capital preservation is a top priority for 89% of Argentines, exceeding the global figure of 83%.

Fiorito further explained that 56% of local investors consider preserving capital against market downturns as the most crucial objective when constructing portfolios. This underscores a heightened pursuit of resilience in an environment marked by persistent uncertainty. He also observed a growing trend towards active management, as investors navigate a more challenging landscape where careful asset selection and adaptability are paramount due to fluctuating returns and macroeconomic instability.

Analysts like Milo Farro from Rava observe a dual profile among Argentine investors. While historically focused on capital preservation due to high inflation and currency volatility, there's a growing interest in higher-risk investments like stocks and American depositary receipts (ADRs). Damián Vlassich from IOL agrees, noting that the average Argentine investor exhibits seemingly contradictory behaviors, balancing a strong desire for capital preservation with a sophisticated approach to investment.
