Argentine league standings set path to 2027 Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana

The annual standings in Argentina's Primera División for 2026 are crucial, not only for determining one relegation spot but also for allocating nine coveted places in the 2027 Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana tournaments. Belgrano de Córdoba has already secured its place in the top continental competition next year by winning the 2026 Torneo Apertura.

Additional berths for the Libertadores will be awarded to the winners of the Clausura tournament and the Copa Argentina. Furthermore, the top three teams in the overall annual table, which combines points from the Apertura and Clausura, will also qualify. Currently, Independiente Rivadavia and Argentinos Juniors lead this group with 38 points, closely followed by Vélez with 37 points after their recent victory.

The next six teams in the annual classification are set to earn spots in the 2027 Copa Sudamericana. This group currently includes Estudiantes and Boca (34 points), Rosario Central and Gimnasia de La Plata (32 points), and Independiente and Barracas Central (30 points). River Plate is currently just outside these qualification zones with 29 points.

Qualification rules also account for teams that secure international spots by winning tournaments. If such a team also finishes within the qualifying range in the annual table, their spot is effectively passed down. This scenario could apply to clubs like Belgrano, or potentially to teams like Independiente Rivadavia, Estudiantes, Platense, or Rosario Central if they win the 2026 Copa Libertadores and maintain a top domestic standing. Similarly, Boca, Tigre, or River could qualify for the next Libertadores through winning the 2026 Copa Sudamericana while also finishing in the top three domestically.
