Argentine Spokesperson, Wife Spent Millions on Credit Cards Amid Salary Concerns

Argentine government spokesperson Manuel Adorni and his wife, Bettina Angeletti, allegedly accumulated credit card expenses exceeding 85.1 million pesos in 2025, averaging 7.1 million pesos monthly. This spending occurred while Adorni's gross monthly salary was reported at 3.5 million pesos, and his wife was registered as a self-employed individual (monotributista).

Reconstruction of financial data by La Nación, based on Central Bank records and banking sources, indicates the couple's credit card consumption totaled over 176 million pesos between December 2023 and March 2026. During this period, they reportedly made 196 debits from their peso accounts to settle credit card debts without any reported late payments or defaults.

Investigators are reportedly scrutinizing the couple's finances due to the pattern of high payments, which on several occasions exceeded double Adorni's declared public salary. For instance, payments in August 2024 reached 7.5 million pesos, May 2025 saw 7.1 million pesos, another 7.5 million pesos in August 2025, and a peak of 9.7 million pesos in October 2025.

While the couple maintained low outstanding balances and paid their debts on time, the sheer volume of payments, often exceeding Adorni's declared income, has fueled suspicions of illicit enrichment. Judicial investigators are reportedly focused on understanding the couple's true cash flow and the sources of income that enabled such substantial spending, particularly given that cash dollars were used for other significant purchases like travel and property.
