Argentine surfer, 40, drowns during practice in Chile

Argentine surfer Gonzalo Balado, 40, drowned off the coast of Chile's Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, after an accident while riding large waves with two companions. The incident occurred Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. in a dangerous area known for its rocks.

Maritime authorities reported the cause of death as asphyxiation by immersion. They noted no special advisories for adverse weather or sea conditions were in effect at the time. Preliminary reports suggest Balado encountered trouble during a maneuver as the surfers were concluding their session.

Balado, originally from Mar del Plata, had lived on Rapa Nui with his partner for a couple of years. Known locally as "El Che" or "Gonchi," he was passionate about both gastronomy and big-wave surfing. "He was in love with surfing here, along with other Rapa Nui locals who ride big waves," said provincial presidential delegate Mai Teao.

Balado co-owned a small restaurant with his partner. "He worked in the kitchen, had a small establishment, a restaurant with his partner, and obviously dedicated his days to that and his free afternoons and weekends to surfing the big waves of Easter Island," authorities stated.

His partner, Yamileth Pasmiño, shared a touching tribute on Instagram, writing, "What a privilege to be loved by you, you went to surf the eternal wave and now you will forever accompany my travels, but from another plane. Thank you for the sea of love you left in all of us. Not everyone does that."
