Argentinian Star Appears to Snub Donald Trump's Handshake at World Cup Ceremony

Argentina's Cristian Romero drew attention during the 2026 World Cup medal ceremony when he appeared to snub U.S. President Donald Trump's handshake. The incident occurred after Argentina's 1-0 loss to Spain in the final, which was decided in extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Romero, a defender for Tottenham, had to leave the match in the 70th minute due to injury. Despite the physical setback, he remained a focal point after the game. As Trump offered handshakes to the Argentinian players receiving silver medals, Romero seemingly bypassed him. He did, however, greet FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who were positioned on either side of Trump.

It remains unclear whether Romero's action was intentional or an accidental oversight. Trump was present to award medals to both teams and individual player awards. His appearance at the stadium was met with audible boos from a portion of the crowd, with reports indicating crowd noise levels rose significantly during his entrance.

Romero was part of the Argentinian squad that won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. This time, however, the team could not defend its title, falling to Spain after a challenging final.
