Arnhem Land leader, land rights stalwart remembered as 'champion for his people'

Arnhem Land has lost a significant figure with the passing of Bakamumu Marika AM, a highly respected senior leader of the Rirratjingu clan. The Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation (RAC) announced his death with profound sadness, remembering him as a founder, long-serving chairman, and current patron.

Marika was recognized for his unwavering commitment to land rights, continuing a vital legacy within Australia's Indigenous rights movement. The RAC spokesperson described him as "a steadfast advocate for land rights, Mr Marika continued one of the most significant legacies in Australia's Indigenous rights history, honouring and advancing the work of his forefathers."

Beyond his advocacy for land rights, Marika dedicated his life to enhancing opportunities for his community. His efforts focused on education, community development, economic participation, and the preservation of cultural heritage. As a proud Rirratjingu man and cultural custodian, he inspired younger generations to embrace their identity and culture.

His leadership was characterized by a collective approach, guided by Yolŋu values and traditions. This collaborative spirit strengthened his community and fostered a sense of pride. The RAC has pledged to honor Marika's legacy, stating they will "forever be guided by his own words."

In a statement from the RAC, Marika's words were shared: "We must continue to strive for a foundation that provides opportunity for our people. You will carry that responsibility along with my wish that unity and love continue to be the mark of the Rirratjingu people. I say to you, as my father said to me, 'stand strong like the rock, Mandula.'" Marika was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2022 for his substantial community service to north-east Arnhem Land.
