Around 100 unsafe schools remain in Kyrgyzstan, Construction Minister says

Around 100 schools in Kyrgyzstan are still in a state of disrepair, Minister of Construction, Architecture and Housing and Communal Services Nurdan Oruntaev stated. He noted that the pace of constructing social facilities has significantly increased in recent years, with 250 to 300 new facilities commissioned annually.

"Today, around 100 unsafe schools remain across the country. The population is growing, and we should provide people with new social facilities," the minister said. He added that approximately 100 social facilities are slated for completion around Independence Day and in early September, with some openings to be held online due to logistical challenges.

The approach to school infrastructure is evolving, with new schools incorporating features for outdoor lessons, dedicated teacher spaces, and areas for students to engage with nature. Oruntaev mentioned that the Ministry of Construction will conduct a year-end analysis to assess the replacement rate of unsafe schools with new facilities. He assured that construction work is proceeding without interruption, with prompt resolution of any issues involving contractors or government agencies.

An exception is the Philharmonic Hall building, where construction was deliberately suspended due to feasibility concerns and is expected to resume under a revised design. Efforts are also underway to enhance the energy efficiency of new schools, including the installation of solar panels that could potentially feed surplus electricity into the national grid. The minister stressed the continuous nature of social facility construction nationwide.

Today, there is not a single facility construction of which has simply been halted because of a problem. If issues arise with contractors, builders or government agencies, we try to resolve them promptly.
