Artemis III: Who are the four astronauts of NASA's new mission

NASA has unveiled the four astronauts selected for the Artemis III mission, slated for 2027. This mission marks a significant step in lunar exploration, focusing on complex orbital rendezvous and docking maneuvers with private company-developed landing systems. The crew comprises three Americans and one Italian, highlighting international collaboration in space exploration.

Leading the mission as commander is veteran astronaut Randy Bresnik, tasked with overseeing all flight operations and coordinating the crew. He brings extensive experience from previous spaceflights and leadership roles within NASA's human exploration programs. Joining him as pilot is Luca Parmitano, an astronaut from the European Space Agency (ESA). Parmitano's assignment is historic, marking the first time an ESA astronaut has been selected for an Artemis program mission. His role underscores Europe's crucial involvement, particularly with the European Service Module powering the Orion spacecraft.

Bresnik will be responsible for overseeing all flight operations and coordinating the crew's activities during a mission that NASA considers one of the most complex in recent decades.

The mission specialists are Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio. Douglas will focus on technical and operational tests to validate systems for future lunar expeditions. Rubio will contribute his expertise to a mission that will include unprecedented tests between the Orion spacecraft and lunar landers being developed by Blue Origin and SpaceX. The Artemis III mission is designed to rigorously test the integrated functionality of various technologies, from software and communications to propulsion and docking systems.

Parmitano's designation represents a historic event: it is the first time a European Space Agency astronaut has received an assignment within the Artemis program.

Bob Hines has been designated as the backup crew member. The Artemis III mission will launch aboard the Space Launch System rocket from the Kennedy Space Center. Once in Earth orbit, the Orion spacecraft and its crew will conduct initial checks before attempting the critical rendezvous and docking maneuvers with the lunar lander prototypes. This mission is considered one of NASA's most complex in recent decades, building upon the groundwork laid by previous Artemis missions.
