AS Monaco Basket faces exclusion from French league despite championship win

AS Monaco Basket, the reigning French champions, is on the brink of exclusion from the professional leagues just a month before the season's start. The French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) has delivered an unfavorable opinion regarding the club's registration for the Betclic Élite championship, casting a shadow over their recent triumphs.

The club, which has won the French championship in 2023, 2024, and 2026, and was a EuroLeague finalist in 2025, has announced it will urgently appeal the CNOSF's decision to the Federal Bureau of the French Basketball Federation (FFBB). This move aims to secure a "re-examination in emergency" of their situation.

This setback follows a previous rejection by the FFBB's Appeals Chamber on July 31st, which cited the club's financial situation. However, Monaco claims to have since taken necessary steps to settle its historical debts and has secured a new investor reportedly committed to mobilizing 10 million euros for the 2026-27 season. This financial injection is intended to bolster the club's stability and meet league requirements.

If AS Monaco Basket is ultimately excluded, the team of Saint-Quentin would be the likely beneficiary, taking their place in the Betclic Élite. The situation remains fluid as the club fights for its place in the league it has dominated in recent years.

The AS Monaco Basket-ball has officially seized this day the Federal Bureau of the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) so that it exercises the faculty that article 925 of the FFBB regulations confers upon it and asks the Chamber of Appeal to proceed, in emergency, with the re-examination of the club's situation with a view to its engagement in Betclic Élite for the 2026-27 season.
