As summer drags on, Switzerland records an unprecedented run of hot days

Summer is refusing to leave Switzerland. Temperatures above 30°C have been recorded across the country since the end of last week, and the heat is expected to persist through Tuesday.

“Temperatures this high are exceptional in September,” said Isabelle Fath, a forecaster at MeteoSwiss. The heat arrived early in the season and is now extending its stay, turning the summer into an increasingly long succession of scorching days.

On Friday, around a dozen weather stations recorded seasonal temperature records. The list included Delémont and Payerne, as well as Geneva, where temperatures reached 33.3°C. That surpassed the previous Geneva record of 33.1°C, set in 1962.

Across Switzerland, the number of hot days recorded this summer stands at three to four times the normal level, depending on the region. The latest measurements add to an already exceptional September, as the country continues to experience heat that would normally have faded by this point in the year.
