Asian Games Baseball: Wang Yen-Cheng to Play for Taiwan Again, CTBA Optimistic

Pitcher Wang Yen-Cheng is poised to once again represent Taiwan on the baseball diamond, potentially donning the national team jersey for the upcoming Asian Games in Nagoya.

The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA) has submitted a preliminary 24-player roster and is actively working on securing commitments from professional players. While negotiations are ongoing, CTBA Secretary-General Lin Tsung-cheng expressed optimism about Wang's availability, citing his strong performance this season with the Hanwha Eagles in the KBO League. "We are very optimistic he can come to play," Lin stated, highlighting Wang's improved confidence and familiarity with the national team coaching staff from his previous inclusion.

Last year's Hangzhou Asian Games saw a significant contingent of professional players, including 10 overseas-based athletes, on Taiwan's roster. For the Nagoya Games, the coaching staff, led by head coach Tang Tsung-kai, aims for a similar composition, with approximately two-thirds of the team being professional players. This strategy is intended to bolster Taiwan's competitiveness against powerhouses like South Korea and Japan.

Wang Yen-Cheng, who was part of the pitching staff in the previous Asian Games, has had a standout season in the KBO, recording 7 wins, 3 losses, and a 3.59 ERA. His performance has drawn attention from Korean media, who acknowledge him as a significant asset for the Taiwanese team. The baseball competition at the Nagoya Asian Games is scheduled to take place from September 21st to 27th.
