Jimmy Rimmer, the former Aston Villa goalkeeper and a celebrated member of their historic 1982 European Cup-winning side, has passed away at the age of 78. Rimmer's distinguished career spanned over two decades, making him one of the few players to achieve European Cup glory with two different English clubs.

Aston Villa announced Rimmer's passing, noting his significant contributions to the club. His career began at Manchester United, where he was part of the squad that secured the European Cup in 1968, though he did not feature in the final. He later moved to Arsenal before establishing himself as Aston Villa's first-choice goalkeeper.

Rimmer played a crucial role in Aston Villa's success during the 1980-81 First Division title campaign and their subsequent European Cup triumph. In the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern Munich, Rimmer started but was forced off due to injury after just nine minutes. Nigel Spink replaced him and delivered a memorable performance, yet Rimmer was recognized as part of the victorious team, earning his second winners' medal.

Throughout his time at Aston Villa, Rimmer made 229 league appearances. He also represented England at the international level, earning one senior cap. His passing marks the end of an era for a goalkeeper who left an indelible mark on English football history.
