At Least 5 Dead, 41 Missing in Ferry Fire Off Indonesia's Java Coast

A devastating fire erupted on a ferry carrying 271 passengers off the coast of Indonesia's Java island, resulting in multiple fatalities and a significant number of missing persons. The Mutiara Sentosa 2 was en route from Surabaya to Makassar when the blaze broke out early in the morning. Contact with the captain was quickly lost as the situation escalated.

The national rescue agency, Basarnas, confirmed at least 5 deaths and reported 41 people missing. While 225 individuals were successfully evacuated, the rescue operation faced considerable challenges. Several vessels, including a tugboat and a cargo ship, assisted in the evacuation, and the Indonesian navy dispatched a warship. However, turbulent seas complicated the efforts.

Images from the scene depicted thick black smoke billowing from the vessel, with passengers seen in life vests on deck, in lifeboats, or jumping into the sea. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with maritime travel in the region.
