At Least Five Killed in Russian Attacks on Ukraine as US Envoys Visit Moscow

Five people were killed and five injured in a Russian attack on Kamianske in southeastern Ukraine as US envoys traveled to Moscow with a proposal to “end the war.”

The strike came hours after Ukrainian forces were reportedly ordered to observe a three-day ceasefire. US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were due to travel to Kyiv on Sunday after visiting Moscow on Saturday.

Ukrainska Pravda reported that the pause for Ukrainian forces was scheduled to run from midnight on September 5 until 11:59 p.m. on September 8. People’s Deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko said the order covered fighting “on the ground, in the air, and at sea.”

But Russian attacks continued overnight, Interfax Ukraine reported. Ukrainian authorities later clarified that the temporary ceasefire did not require action along the front because Russia had not stopped its attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces struck a civilian enterprise in Kamianske and carried out what he called demonstrative strikes on airports in Kyiv and Boryspil. He said Ukraine would adjust its operations regarding Russian airspace the following week.

Other overnight attacks injured three people in the Odesa region, including a 17-year-old boy, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported. A 17-year-old girl was also injured in Mykolaiv. Separately, the International Atomic Energy Agency said a local ceasefire had been brokered to allow repairs restoring external power to the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. The plant had been without external power since August 20 and relied on emergency diesel generators to cool its safety systems.
