Atakum Municipality Workers Protest Four Months of Unpaid Wages

Municipal workers in Atakum, Turkey, are protesting the non-payment of their wages for the past four months. The demonstration, held in front of the Samsun branch of the Genel-İş Union, highlighted the severe financial distress faced by hundreds of employees.

Fatma Ayyıldız Sayım, speaking on behalf of the "Atakum Municipality Workers' Solidarity," read a statement detailing the ongoing crisis. The workers have not been paid for four months, but the issue of irregular wage payments predates this period, extending back to the last local elections. Despite the passage of time, no permanent solution has been implemented, and workers are reportedly kept waiting with promises of future payments.

The statement emphasized that wages are fundamental for covering basic necessities such as housing, food, and education for children, enabling a dignified life. Hundreds of municipal workers are currently unable to afford rent, are burdened by loans and debts, have to buy groceries on credit, and cannot provide for their children's most basic needs. The situation was described as neither normal nor acceptable.

Beyond delayed wages, workers also face the erosion of rights gained over years, with collective bargaining processes reportedly conducted without their input. Coupled with high inflation, their wages have rapidly diminished in value. The protest also directed criticism at the Genel-İş Union itself, accusing it of failing to organize a strong enough fight, leaving workers feeling abandoned, and not taking a firm stance against the injustices.

"Representation is not just about collecting dues, appearing during elections, or maintaining good relations with managers," the statement declared. "Representation means being the voice of the worker, walking at the forefront when necessary, and defending the rights of labor to the end." The protesters called on the Atakum Municipality to immediately pay all accumulated wages and to provide a transparent and binding schedule for future payments.
