Athletics: 17-year-old American star edges Olympic champion in 800m thriller

American prodigy Cooper Lutkenhaus, just 17 years old, delivered a stunning performance at the Diamond League meet in Oslo, narrowly edging out Paris Olympics gold medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya in the men's 800 meters. The race concluded with a photo finish, Lutkenhaus crossing the line a mere 0.01 seconds ahead of Wanyonyi.

Lutkenhaus's winning time of 1 minute 42.08 seconds not only secured him the gold medal but also established a new world-leading mark for the season. This personal best also shattered the Americas U20 record, placing him second on the all-time U20 list behind Nijel Amos's 1:41.73.

The young American's victory in Oslo builds on a remarkable run of recent successes. Just the previous week, Lutkenhaus defeated Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop of Canada to win his first career Diamond League title in Stockholm. Prior to that, he made history at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in March, becoming the youngest male 800m champion at 17 years and 93 days old with a time of 1:44.24.
