Atiku votes in Adamawa, says ADC primary step to recover Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) commenced its presidential primary on Monday for the 2027 general elections, with prominent figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi participating. The nationwide exercise is being conducted across 8,809 wards in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, utilizing a direct primary method.

I joined other prospective voters of the African Democratic Congress in our party’s presidential primaries in casting my vote at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta Yola, Adamawa State. This is democracy at work. The election taking place simultaneously in 8,809 Wards in Nigeria is a major step in our quest to recover our beloved country and set it on the path of prosperity.

This direct primary approach was adopted after efforts to select a consensus candidate reportedly failed, leaving all three presidential aspirants in the race. Atiku Abubakar cast his vote at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State. He described the exercise as a demonstration of democracy and a "major step in our quest to recover our beloved country and set it on the path of prosperity."

In Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi participated in the primary at his Ubima polling unit. Addressing supporters, he urged voters to "Vote for merit, not ethnicity or religion," emphasizing competence in leadership. Amaechi was observed engaging with residents as voting proceeded across the country.

Another aspirant, Hayatu-Deen, participating from Borno State, called on supporters to back his candidacy for a "new direction" for the party. The ADC's decision to proceed with a direct primary is seen as a key step in selecting its presidential candidate for the anticipated competitive 2027 presidential contest. Party officials have urged peaceful participation across all voting centers.
